1. Overview & Definition

Vias are essential conductive structures that realize electrical interconnection between different layers of a printed circuit board (PCB). Selecting appropriate via types directly affects circuit signal integrity, heat dissipation efficiency, wiring density, mechanical reliability and manufacturing cost. This article systematically compares three mainstream via solutions: filled vias, conventional through vias, and blind/buried vias, to help hardware designers and PCB manufacturers make optimal component selection for diverse electronic projects.

1.1 Filled Via

A high-reliability upgraded via solution based on standard through vias. The hollow inner cavity of the via is fully filled with conductive metal material or insulating resin via professional PCB fabrication processes, followed by surface planarization treatment. It eliminates hollow defects thoroughly and serves for high-precision, high-density and high-power PCB applications.

1.2 Conventional Through Via

The most cost-effective and widely used basic via type in the PCB industry. This type of via penetrates the entire PCB stack-up vertically. Only the via wall is electroplated with copper for electrical conduction, while the inner hole remains hollow without extra filling materials, featuring exposed openings on both top and bottom surfaces.

1.3 Blind & Buried Via

A specialized layered interconnection structure designed for high-density multi-layer PCBs. A blind via connects the outer surface layer to a designated inner layer without penetrating the whole board; a buried via is completely embedded inside the PCB stack-up and only interconnects multiple inner layers, with no contact with external board surfaces.
